In one of the most unique event locations in the world, Germany’s Melt! brightens up the monuments of the machine age - the wheel excavators, dredgers and stackers of Ferropolis - with bunting, bare lighting and over-sized flowers for three days of festival magic.
Over 40 electronica and rock acts perform each year between the disco balls suspended from trusses, lampshades sitting in the sun and the flames thrown from the mighty cranes.
What’s more, with the festival’s position on a peninsula in Lake Gremmin, there’s plenty of opportunity to have a swim in the day or simply feel the waves at your feet by the Beach Stage come sunset.
The City of Iron doesn’t catch a wink of shut-eye over the weekend either. The main stages pump out from 3pm to 7am and the Sleepless Floor is open non-stop until the golden sun breaks through the brackets of the dredgers on Monday morning.
Throw in stout sound systems, a spaced out campsite, ad-hoc parties, and a multinational audience and it’s easy to see why it took away the Best Medium-Sized Festival 2013 gong at the European Festival Awards.
